How a PDF tool can work without uploads

Most PDF sites are a thin page in front of a server: your file is uploaded, processed somewhere you can’t see, and sent back. ShyPDF ships the processing code to you instead. When you open a tool, your browser downloads the program — open-source engines such as pdf-lib, PDF.js, qpdf and Tesseract, built to run inside a browser tab — and runs it on your own device. The PDF you choose is read from your disk into the tab’s memory, and the result is saved straight to your downloads folder.

You don’t have to take that on trust. Open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run any tool: no request carries your file. The site’s security policy also forbids its pages from connecting to any other domain, so the promise is enforced by your browser rather than by us.

What you can do here

There are 23 tools, all free and all local: merge, split, reorder, rotate, crop and delete pages; add page numbers, watermarks, text, highlights and signatures; fill in forms; convert between PDF and Word, JPG, PNG and plain text; compress files for email; make scans searchable with OCR; repair damaged files; and add or remove a password. Nothing needs an account, and nothing puts a watermark on your output.

When it fits, and when it doesn’t

Working locally suits the files people are most reluctant to upload: contracts, bank statements, tax forms, medical records, ID scans. It is also quick — there is no upload or download to wait for, so the speed depends on your device, not your connection.

The trade-off is memory. Files are limited to 50 MB each because everything happens inside a browser tab, and a very large scan on an older phone can run out of room. For a scanned archive of several hundred pages, a desktop app is still the better choice. For everyday documents, a browser tab is enough.
